The East 4×4 tour has a little bit of everything! Rich in culture, with some of the most beautiful landscapes you can set your eyes on and breath-taking trails that will take you from sea level to Madeira’s highest mountains…. All while we run away from the big groups and tourist traps!

On board our Jeep, the trip starts from Funchal to Poiso at 1 412mts of altitude, passing by Montado do Pereiro (protected Natural Área), always with its beautiful bay in the background. Along the way we can contemplate very dramatic views and a breathtaking landscape over the south and north side of the island.
Our first stop will be at Pico Areeiro, the 3rd highest peak on the island, 1811m above sea level.
After that, we venture to the North side of the island, along the ancient royal footpath, where our sight is captured by the geometry of the oldest terraces of the island, along the beaten tracks crossing the wonderful Laurisilva forest and the water springs that supply the trout tanks. You will be amazed at the isolated rural nature of the villages we will visit.
As we continue our descent, we will be able to contemplate the imponent form of the rock formation Penha d’Águia (Eagle’s Rock) which will accompany us, as we climb the mountain side.
After a Spectacular OFF ROAD, where we’ll enjoy a wonderful scenery, we will arrive to Santana, where we will make a stop for lunch, in a family-owned restaurant.
(Lunch – optional extra, not included in price and highly recommended).
In Santana you will find the traditional, authentic “A-Frame” houses you might have seen online or in guide books.
After the lunch stop, the program continues direction Faial & Porto da Cruz where we will make a walk through a small section of a levada of a levada, about 2km (not touristy).
We will return all the way back by the eastern coast, passing by Maroços and Machico (the bay where the Portuguese landed in 1419/20).
We will not return home without drinking our famous Poncha in a local bar, our vitamins 😊
This is a fun and informative trip for all ages and a great “first tour” for everyone visiting our beautiful island.
